Third Grade News

September 30, 2016

What we have done:

This week we finished Topic 3 over subtracting and tested on Friday.  This topic showed how to add and subtract using models and expanded algorithm. Also how

to add 3 or more numbers and how to subtract across zeros.  In ELA we are focusing on the writing process using graphic organizers for the prewriting.  Then drafting by skipping every other line so students have room to revise and edit their narrative.  Below you will find what will be happening in our classrooms next week.

ELA:

Students will be focusing on completing their second narrative by using the writing process. In reading we will be looking at literal and nonliteral meanings as well as using illustrations for better understanding. We will continue to use comprehension strategies with our literature discussion group books.

Math:    

We will be starting Topic 4 over multiplication. This unit will introduce the meanings of multiplication.

Content:

We will be finishing our unit over electricity and magnetism with a test on Tuesday. Then we will dive into learning about government!

Food Can Drive Results

I just wanted to say thank you again for all of the canned food donations that were brought in this past week.  I am so overwhelmed with the success of this project and I know that we couldn't have done it without the help of all of the homeroom teachers that encouraged kids to participate whether it was for the prizes or to help those in need. The end result was that we donated more than 4 truckloads of canned food items and one car load to FBC in Clever.  

My final tally was 2,869 items donated district-wide!

Third Grade News

September 19, 2016

What we have done:

We started Topic 3 in math over addition and subtraction. In ELA we have been continuing to work on the writing process and writing a personal narrative. We have been looking at the book A Bad Case of the Stripes to study and assess main idea. Below you will find what will be happening in our classrooms next week.

ELA:

Students will be focusing on the writing process for their next personal narrative. We will continue to practice Literature Discussion Group activities as well.  

Math:    

Students will be continuing Topic 3 that continues to work on addition and subtraction and shows different methods of how to add and subtract.  Your child can continue to practice rounding, estimating, addition and subtraction problems at home.

Content:

We will be focusing on magnetic relationships and electromagnets!

How you can help our class:

If you would like to donate candy (no peanuts) or small toys to our classroom treasure box, you are welcome to send it in with your student!

September 29th- Volleyball

September 29th:  Diggin Up Gold and EleMiddle Night at the Volleyball game.  Game time:  6:00.

 September is childhood cancer awareness month, so in honor of this, we're hosting a Going Gold night on Thursday, September 29th during the High school volleyball game! We'll have food and desserts (bake sale items) and a silent auction going on in the HS commons area. We will also have a chance for you to win prizes by "buying" a VB player that night to serve for you during a heated competition in between games!  This event is in honor of Lane Mendenhall (5th grader and son of our Para and bus driver, Sam Mendenhall).  Come out and support Lane and Clever Lady Jay Volleyball.  If  you haven't been to a volleyball match yet this year, you are in for a real treat!    Preschool- 8th grade students get in FREE and parents get 1/2 price admission ($1.50 ea.)

Food Drive

The Future Business Leaders of America students at the high school have invited us to participate in a canned food drive the week of September 19th-23rd. Students will be bringing down boxes and accounting forms for teachers to track their daily collections and total for the week.  The class that collects the most will earn a party of their choice (donuts, ice cream sundaes, cookie decorating, etc).

Third Grade News

September 9, 2016

What we have done:

This week we have continued to working on the second topic in math. We have taken a few extra days to work on rounding and rounding to estimate equations. In ELA was have been working on the writing process and writing a story about their Grandparents. We also reviewed all the parts of speech we have talked about so far. Below you will find what will be happening in our classrooms next week.

ELA:

Students will be focusing on the Revising step in the writing process this week. For Language, students will be looking at different non-fiction texts to learn about text features, main idea and how to compare and contrast across texts. We will continue to practice Literature Discussion Group activities as well.

Math:    

Students will be wrapping up Topic 2 over addition and subtraction and taking a test on Wednesday, September 14. Your child can continue to practicing rounding numbers to the nearest ten and nearest hundred.  Estimating sums, estimating differences, making sense of addition and subtraction equations, and seeing if problems are reasonable will also all be covered on our test.

We will be starting our science unit on Matter!

Third Grade News - September 2, 2016

What we have done:

We have started on our second topic in math over addition and subtraction. We have talked about subtraction and addition and its meaning, using mental math to add and subtract, and introduced rounding. In ELA we have been working on a how to write personal narratives,including good beginnings and juicy middles! We have also been exploring parts of speech in our Patricia Polacco books. Below you will find what will be happening in our classrooms next week.

ELA:

Students will be digging deep into our last Patricia Polacco book! We will be discussing how to write and add dialogue into our personal narratives, as well as what pronouns are and do for our writing. We will also continue to practice Literature Discussion Group activities as well.

Math:    

Students will continue to work on Topic 2 over addition and subtraction. We will continue to work on rounding, estimating sums, estimating differences, making sense of addition and subtraction equations, and seeing if problems are reasonable.                                                                                                            

Content:

Next week we will be discussing Westward Expansion and how it affected the Native Americans. We will be exploring the point of view of the pioneers and of the Native Americans.
